Background of the Study

Gender equality in political participation is a fundamental issue in the pursuit of democratic governance, yet it remains a significant challenge in many regions of Nigeria. In Bauchi Local Government Area (LGA), Bauchi State, women have historically faced barriers to political participation due to cultural, social, and economic constraints. These barriers include limited access to education, economic empowerment, and political networks, which result in underrepresentation of women in political offices and decision-making processes (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2023). Despite these challenges, gender equality in politics has been gaining attention in recent years, with various policies and programs aiming to increase women’s political participation.

This study seeks to evaluate the extent to which gender equality has been achieved in political participation in Bauchi LGA. By examining the role of women in political offices, political parties, and civil society organizations, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing gender parity in politics in Bauchi (Adebayo et al., 2024). The study will also explore the effectiveness of gender-focused policies in promoting equal political participation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Women in Bauchi LGA, like in many parts of Nigeria, have been marginalized in political participation, with cultural and institutional barriers hindering their active engagement in politics. Although there have been efforts to increase women’s participation, the gap remains wide, and the impact of such efforts has not been thoroughly assessed. This study aims to evaluate gender equality in political participation in Bauchi LGA and to identify the barriers and enablers to women’s involvement in politics in the region.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of gender equality in political participation in Bauchi LGA.

  2. To assess the impact of gender-focused policies and programs on women’s political participation in Bauchi.

  3. To identify the barriers to political participation faced by women in Bauchi LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. To what extent has gender equality been achieved in political participation in Bauchi LGA?

  2. What role have gender-focused policies played in enhancing women’s political participation in Bauchi LGA?

  3. What barriers hinder women’s political participation in Bauchi LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Gender equality in political participation has not been fully achieved in Bauchi LGA.

  2. Gender-focused policies have had a positive impact on increasing women’s political participation in Bauchi LGA.

  3. Cultural, economic, and social barriers limit the political participation of women in Bauchi LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it will provide a clear picture of the challenges and opportunities for achieving gender equality in political participation in Bauchi LGA. It will offer insights into the effectiveness of existing policies and propose recommendations for strengthening women’s involvement in politics, which can contribute to broader democratic governance in Nigeria (Kazeem & Bello, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State, and will assess women’s participation in political offices, political parties, and civil society organizations. Limitations include the difficulty of obtaining data on gender-specific political participation and potential biases in self-reporting.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Gender Equality: The equal representation, opportunities, and participation of both genders in political activities.

  • Political Participation: The involvement of individuals or groups in political processes, including voting, running for office, and engaging in political discussions.

  • Gender-Focused Policies: Policies aimed at addressing gender imbalances in political representation and ensuring equal access to political opportunities.
